Health Screening Packages in Kuala Lumpur: A Medical Tourism Guide
Kuala Lumpur, my current home base, is known for its towering skyscrapers, bustling markets, and diverse cultures. But there’s another side to this vibrant city that's gaining international attention: its world-class medical facilities. Combining the allure of travel with the practicality of healthcare, medical tourism here offers a unique opportunity for those seeking quality treatment without breaking the bank.
As a seasoned traveller and a resident of Kuala Lumpur for over 4 years now, I've witnessed firsthand as the city leans into an identity as a sought-after destination for medical tourism. One attractive option at hospitals in Kuala Lumpur includes their comprehensive health screening packages, which come at a reasonable cost and short timeframe for foreigners who face long wait times or high healthcare costs, such as Canadians or Americans. I can see the appeal of Malaysia for international patients, as KL offers English-speaking doctors and administration, as well as well-trained and reliable medical professionals and short wait times for appointments.
In this blog post, I’ll share information about some of the most popular private medical facilities in Kuala Lumpur: Prince Court Medical Centre, Gleneagles Hospital, Sunway Velocity Medical Centre, Subang Jaya Medical Centre, LifeCare Diagnostic Medical Centre, and Pantai Hospital. For each one, I'll share a description of what they offer, approximate cost of services, location, Google rating, booking information and links, as well as any notes I have about experiences there.
NOTE: THIS ARTICLE IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE
I am not a medical professional. This article is based on my own experiences and those of friends, as well as information pulled directly from the websites of the hospitals mentioned. This article is intended to be guidance on what's available for health screenings in Kuala Lumpur.
Hospital prices and services are subject to change.

Q&A: Seeking Healthcare in KL
-
Medical tourism usually refers to purposefully planning and travelling to another country for medical consultations, procedures or treatments. It’s a blend of healthcare and travel — wherein healthcare becomes the adventure in itself.
The allure of medical tourism is often about lower costs, but it's not only that. It can also be about accessing a wide range of treatments, sometimes unavailable at home, or avoiding long wait times.
For example, someone from Canada might opt for less expensive dental work or skip an 8-month waiting period for knee surgery by having it done in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, followed by a recovery period somewhere nice while enjoying local foods. Medical tourism can also help people stay healthy by opting for more basic preventive medicine where the cost of tests is less expensive.
-
Overall, I have found private healthcare in Kuala Lumpur to be of a high quality standard. That said, it’s always a good idea to consider the cultural context of the place you are visiting.
No matter where you seek healthcare, remember to always advocate for yourself and your comfort — it’s always within your right to decline anything you’re not comfortable with, refuse services/procedures and to opt out at any time.
Here are a couple of cultural considerations for KL (please let me know in the comments if you have others to add!).
RELIGION:
Malaysia is a pretty conservative country, with Muslims making up over 60% of the population. Since 40% of the population isn’t Muslim, Malaysians are generally quite tolerant about different cultures, however it can sometimes have an impact on the experience of non-Muslims visiting, so there are a few things to consider.
In Malaysia, you’ll find people dressed in all sorts of different ways, from normal street clothes to traditional Malay clothing, women in hijab (hair covering), women without hijab, Indian sarees to short shorts. You can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Depending where you are, women may feel more comfortable dressing a bit more on the conservative side, just to avoid unwanted attention.
Personally, I did not feel comfortable with male gynecology in Malaysia, as I had experiences where they were quite judgmental and it felt uneasy. Of course, this will not always be the case, but you can consider requesting a female doctor to avoid discomfort.
In Malaysian culture it’s perfectly normal and accepted to request a female doctor for women, so you can make this request before your visit. Also note that the practice here is to always have a female nurse in the room with you when a male gynecologist is with you.
2. CONCEPT OF TIME:
Overall, efficiency is not generally a staple of Southeast Asian service and administration, including Malaysia. So be prepared to be patient with wait times.
Wait times to get an appointment at a private hospital here can vary from a day to a few weeks, depending on the appointment type, but normally you can see someone relatively soon when needed. I provide appointment booking details for each hospital below.
If you’re going for a health screening, expect it to take most of the day to complete.
In most cases, you’ll need to arrive 30 minutes early to register in a separate area, then go to your appointment and wait again, then you may have to wait between individual check-ups, and then wait again at another area to pay at the end.
If you aren’t sure where you should be at any given point, or if you’ve been waiting a while without an update, I suggest checking-in with an admin. It does happen that people get forgotten so it never hurts to nudge politely.
-
The simple answer is cost and quality.
Malaysia has excellent health professionals and facilities which are quite easy to access for foreigners, both in terms of wait times and prices. While private hospitals are considered expensive by Malaysian standards, they are still less expensive than healthcare in most Western countries, and for the most part, you can expect quality of service which is just as good, if not better. Of course, this will vary from doctor to doctor and specialisation to specialisation.
I come from Canada, where we have access to largely free healthcare. I am eternally grateful for that and I remain a strong believer in universal healthcare. That said, universal healthcare in Canada still lacks in many areas — particularly wait times, preventative care and pharmacare. What I particularly like about Malaysia’s private hospitals are the packages called “comprehensive health screenings” which are aimed at preventative health, something I have appreciated since being here.
If anything is suspect or diagnosed in a health screening, you can then proceed almost immediately to get further testing, treatment or to see a specialist, if needed.
-
A comprehensive medical screening is a thorough health check-up designed to evaluate your overall health status. Unlike routine doctor's visits that may focus on specific symptoms or conditions, comprehensive screening is proactive, seeking to identify potential health issues before they become serious.
Comprehensive health screening test packages will normally include a range of standardized check-ups and tests, based on your gender and age, which can be done at one medical centre on the same day, for a package price.
The goal and importance of comprehensive medical screening is to stay healthy through the early detection and prevention of diseases. By identifying problems early, there's a better chance of successful treatment and preventing more serious health conditions from developing. By getting regular health screenings, you are taking a proactive step in maintaining good health and a crucial part of any healthcare regimen.
Screenings usually include a physical examination, where a doctor checks for visible signs of health issues. This physical examination might involve examining your skin for suspicious moles or lumps, listening to your heart and lungs, and other similar checks. Some screenings include blood tests, for example, to check for signs of conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol or kidney function issues. Heart health might be assessed through tests like an ECG (electrocardiogram) and stress test, which monitors the heart's electrical activity.
Typically, you will leave the screening with a comprehensive package containing your results (in English), which you can then share with your practitioner(s) at home, or with a specialist at the same hospital in KL.
Your health screening program should be tailored to individual needs, taking into account factors like age, gender, family history, and lifestyle. Be sure to do your research and speak with the physician responsible for your screening about any specific needs or concerns.
How To Prepare For a Comprehensive Health Screening
Be sure to read the instructions for your health screening carefully, as it's likely that you'll need to fast before your tests. Often it's just a 10-hour fasting period, but that can vary from test to test, so check if you can eat or drink plain water before arriving.
Scheduling Tips
Due to fasting requirements, I suggest you make sure to make an appointment which starts early morning. 10 AM is a sweet spot since you can avoid the worst of KL traffic by leaving after 9 AM.
That said, traffic can still be heavy in Kuala Lumpur, so give yourself extra time to arrive, especially if you are driving or taking Grab.
Things don't tend to move quickly in Malaysia, even in professional settings, so be sure to set aside the full day for your visit.
Bring water and plan to eat at the medical facility - they will have cafes/restaurants and convenience stores on-site. Hospitals like Prince Court include a voucher for lunch in the health screening package.
For women who menstruate, note the instructions for your screening about when it's best to do your tests according to your menstrual cycle. Usually, the request is that you get tested about 1-week after the end of your last period, but this might vary depending on what you're having assessed.
What to bring
Health screenings are an out-patient service, however you will spend the better part of a day at the hospital to run various tests and wait for results. I suggest you wear comfortable clothes and bring the following with you:
Passport
Past medical records and family history, if applicable
Insurance details or guarantee letter, if applicable
Workout clothes, if you’re doing an exercise ECG test (aka stress test)
Jumper or cardigan to stay warm (air conditioning is intense in Malaysia!)
Something to occupy you while waiting in between screenings, like a book or earphones for podcasts, etc.

Medical Centres Offering Health Screening Packages in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Multiple hospitals offer health screening packages in Kuala Lumpur. I will cover six of them in this article, including pricing, packages, reviews, location and more:
Please note my disclaimer and that prices/packages are subject to change.
Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC)
In central Kuala Lumpur, you'll find Prince Court Medical Centre, which opened in 2007. Prince Court has become popular among expats and medical tourists in Malaysia. It's known for its comprehensive approach to healthcare which adheres to international standards.
Stepping into Prince Court Medical Centre feels more like a luxury hotel than a typical medical facility. From the cafes and gleaming glass walls and elevators, it is beautifully designed. As you move further into the centre, the surroundings transition to the more familiar sights of a hospital – pristine and sterile, but maintaining an air of professionalism that sets Prince Court apart from regular hospitals in Malaysia.
-
As of November 2023, Prince Court Medical Centre has a Google review rating of 4.6 stars (4,176 reviews).
-
Health Screening Packages at Prince Court range from RM 600-2050.

-
You can pick a Prince Court Health Screening that suits you from their 8 standardized package options, which are tailored by gender and age group:

Each of these health screenings will include a consultation and physical examination by a doctor, a full screening report and several screenings and tests (which vary by package), and then an explanation of your screening report by the doctor.
Your full screening can be done in the same, one-day program. In some cases, you may be asked to come back the next day for your test results.
Besides the standardized health screenings, Prince Court also offers vaccinations, corporate health screening and occupational health screening services.
-
I have been to Prince Court numerous times, including for a health screening, but also to see several specialists. Overall, I have had a very positive experience with healthcare here, including gynaecology, pap smear, breast and pelvic ultrasounds, and clinics for respiratory and digestive health.
The pharmacists here are also very knowledgeable, attentive and helpful, however, pharmacy wait times can be quite lengthy.
While you can get an appointment pretty quickly at Prince Court, they do tend to have long wait times when you arrive for registration and your appointment.
-
The only negative experience I have had with Prince Court is their physiotherapy clinic. In my experience, it is quite behind in terms of modern and effective physical rehabilitation approaches. Not only are the wait times often long (even when you have an appointment), but they don't do proper assessments of patients and you can't be sure to see the same therapist each time you visit.
I think for standard therapies you might be fine, but for more complex ones, I would go to a physiotherapy clinic like the KL Sports Medicine Hospital or MyPhysio FiCoMo.
-
Conveniently, Prince Court Medical Centre has a WhatsApp number to arrange bookings by text. Alternatively, you can use the booking form or send them an email.

Besides the standardized health screenings, Gleneagles also offers screening packages for pre-employment and immigration.
-
I have more limited experience with Gleneagles, however, I have been there for consultations with doctors for back pain and found the facilities and service to be great.
I recently also saw a neurologist here for migraines, and ended up switching to a specialist at Prince Court because I wasn’t a huge fan of this department. I had some concerns with how they treated patient files.

I personally have only visited for a walk-in appointment to get an x-ray done when I saw a chiropractor nearby. However, I do have a friend who goes here regularly for regular or annual checkups and has seen specialists who helped her, including Dr. Wong Yen Shi for gynaecology and Dr. Chai Chiun Kian for ENT.

To book an appointment at LifeCare Diagnostic, I suggest purchasing from their website ahead of time, as some of their packages offer a discount for advance purchase. Their website is quite clunky, so you can use the direct links for each package (provided above).

From there, follow the instructions to book the date and time for your visit via WhatsApp or phone.

Navigating Kuala Lumpur
How To Get Around
Kuala Lumpur is a big, hectic city, so if you're coming here for medical tourism, you'll want to familiarise yourself with where your appointments will be and make sure you choose your accommodations relative to that. Google Maps works well in KL for using public transportation, and drivers seem to prefer using Waze for driving directions. Some parts of KL are not very walkable which can be a challenge.
Public Transportation
If you choose a medical centre near an LRT or MRT train station, then you could make your life easy and select accommodations near a station with a direct route. This way, you avoid traffic altogether.
Taxis, Rideshares or Driving
If you aren't well enough to take public transportation or don't want to, then just be conscious of traffic and choose somewhere relatively close by.
If you want to use rideshares or taxis in Kuala Lumpur, I strongly suggest you install and set up the apps Grab and InDrive so you have options for how to call them. Grab has the most drivers, but sometimes they spike prices in peak hours, so it's good to have an alternative.
Where To Stay
Choose somewhere convenient for you based on the medical centre you'll be going to (especially if you'll have to be there multiple days), but also somewhere where you can access and enjoy the city.
Popular areas for tourists to stay include KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre), Bukit Bintang and Chinatown. If you prefer to be out of the hustle and bustle of the city, you could consider neighbourhoods like Mont Kiara or Petaling Jaya.
If you will be in Kuala Lumpur for more long-term, I suggest choosing an apartment rental in one of many beautiful condos in the city. Robertson and Regalia are some of my favourites for apartment rentals.
If you prefer a hotel, you can find and book one here with Booking.com:
What To Do With Your Free Time
You may as well enjoy your time in Kuala Lumpur, so be sure to take advantage of the amazing Malay, Indian and Chinese food you'll find here, explore Chinatown's markets, cafes and hidden bars, visit the Petronas Twin Towers during the day and at night to enjoy their spectacular architecture, visit the Islamic Arts Museum, go to Batu Caves to see a gigantic statue of Lord Murugan and the famous rainbow steps, and take a stroll in the Perdana Botanical Gardens.
You can also book a food tour, half-day tour, or even a day tour outside of the city, using GetYourGuide:
If you have a free weekend and want to explore further, consider a weekend trip to Penang (Malaysia), or head to Krabi or Bangkok (Thailand), or even to Singapore.
If you have even more free time during your visit, then check out Sabah, Borneo (Malaysia), North Sumatra (Indonesia), Siem Reap (Cambodia) or consider a side trip to beautiful Vietnam.
Lastly, if you're a diver, then definitely make time to visit Malaysia's Pehrentian Islands or Sipadan Islands for some of the best diving in the world.

Wishing You Well on Your Health Journey in Kuala Lumpur
I hope this guide to health screenings in Kuala Lumpur has sparked some ideas and provided valuable insights into what the city has to offer in the realm of medical tourism. Kuala Lumpur is not just a hub for diverse cultures and delicious food; it's also a growing centre for quality healthcare that's accessible and affordable.
As someone who's navigated the healthcare landscape here, I encourage you to explore these options, do your due diligence, and choose what’s best for your health and peace of mind based on the packages they offer, price points, specialities and, of course, your health needs.
I will note that I purposely did not include BP Healthcare or UMBI Wellness Centre on this list because I haven't been to either and I find their websites to be unprofessional and their Google review ratings to be quite low. Based on my research, reviews and experiences shared by friends here, I believe that the five medical centres I've presented are your best options for comprehensive health screening in Kuala Lumpur. While I've personally used Prince Court the most, I do believe they all have something to offer.
And if you've already been to KL for medical tourism, I'd love to hear about your experiences. Your stories and tips are invaluable, not just to me, but to the entire Travelynne community. So, share your thoughts in the comments, or reach out to me directly – let’s keep the conversation going!
Here’s to your health and adventures in this vibrant city!
