20 Best Bar Hangouts & Entertainment in Kuala Lumpur (with prices)
Discover the best bars in Kuala Lumpur for every occasion, from rooftop views to live music, fancy to casual, and of course, some hidden speakeasies. Check out my free guide below to find your vibe — a fun night out awaits!
I lived in KL for almost five years, and it took me a while to find my favorite spots to soak in the city’s nightlife or enjoy an outing with friends. At first glance, KL’s social scene can feel a bit scattered, but once you know where to go, you'll find everything from sleek rooftop lounges and hidden bars to quirky divey spots with live music and casual street-side hangouts for buckets of beer.
While some tourists flock straight to Changkat — KL’s infamous pub street — the real gems are often just off the beaten path. Travelynne readers know better thanks to this guide, highlighting some of my favorite spots for cocktails (or mocktails), buckets of beer, entertainment, and great food, with venues to suit different budgets and vibes across Bukit Bintang, Chinatown, KLCC, Chow Kit, and Bangsar South.
A must-do experience while in KL is a rooftop bar for sunset with dramatic views, like this one at Vertigo.

Located in Kuala Lumpur's bustling nightlife hub, Bukit Bintang is within walking distance of Jalan Alor’s street food, Changkat’s bar strip, Pavilion KL shopping center, Red Room Karaoke Pavilion (among other karaoke spots), and the Lot 10 mall. That means you can easily combine dinner, bar hopping and entertainment here, heading to Jalan Alor for street food or the Japanese food court on Lot 10’s top floor — or one of the many shawarma/kebab shops in the area for an inexpensive but yummy treat.
Changkat, seen from above, is Kuala Lumpur's infamously rowdy bar street, located in the bustling heart of Bukit Bintang.
1. For Views: Vertigo at Banyan Tree
If panoramic views are what you're after — and why wouldn’t you be in a city with such an incredible skyline? — Vertigo at the Banyan Tree Hotel is your best bet. Located on the 59th and 60th floors, Vertigo offers a 270-degree view of Kuala Lumpur, and the top floor (often reserved for private events) provides a full 360-degree panorama. For the best view, grab a seat on the side facing the Petronas Towers and KL Tower, where the skyline is most striking. Honestly, Vertigo serves up the best views in the city.
For the best sunset experience at Vertigo, request a seat on the side facing Merdeka 118 - from here you'll see KL's best skyscrapers illuminate as the sun dips down.
I recommend skipping the food and sticking to drinks here — especially the signature “Locally Inspired” selections — local twists on classics, like the Mount Genting (gin, dry vermouth, lime juice, lychee & raspberry syrup & egg white). Vertigo asks guests to make reservations for the best sunset views, which is worth doing to guarantee your spot. However, if you’re going for a quick stop and you match the smart casual dress code, you might still get a seat without a reservation by asking politely and agreeing to move before the reservation guests arrive.

2. 🎵 For Debaucherous Fun: Suzie Wong — Dinner and Show
The interior of Suzie Wong is already so dramatic and intriguing - then the true magic happens when their shows begin!
Looking for something unforgettable? Suzie Wong delivers. Tucked away at the back of Wisma Lim Foo Yong in Bukit Bintang, this hidden gem exudes old-school Chinese speakeasy charm, complete with velvet reds and golds. The live bands here are solid, but the real highlight is the weekly cabaret show, which never fails to entertain. Order among a menu of playful cocktails served in quirky ways (think birdcages), and their latest menu offers Chinese food like dim sum and noodles.
Seating is limited, so it’s a good idea to reserve in advance, especially if you want a front-row seat for the show.
A live cover band - which always impresses - plays classic hits in between cabaret shows at Suzie Wong. This singer - Ryan Pynam - was incredible, nailing even Whitney Houston and Celine Dion hits!
These photos are as blurry as my memory usually is after a night here! Show numbers vary week-to-week but include both fun and sexy dance and lip-synching numbers with talented performers and extravagant costumes. My personal favorite was when they did Disney numbers!

3. For Gin Cocktails: Pahit
A 15-minute walk from Changkat, Pahit is a hidden gem that became one of my go-to spots (and date spots, if I’m being honest) when I lived in Bukit Bintang. This cozy space specializes in gin, with a fantastic selection, including fruit-infused selections like jackfruit & lime, calamansi & asamboi (sour plum), and lychee & ginger flower - giving you a taste of local ingredients. The vibe is intimate, with a quaint outdoor terrace and dim indoor seating. And if you’re peckish, don’t miss their snacks — the sambal chicken wings are a must-try! If you’re hungrier, the sambal tumis barramundi is also delicious.
If you love gin, Pahit is a must-try! I love how they infuse local ingredients to create unique and delicious cocktail, all in a stylish off-the-beaten-path venue.

Order from the board for beer on tap, or check out their wide selection of cans and bottles in the refrigerators.

If you're after a lively, social atmosphere and some dancing, Havana has got you covered. This vibrant venue — popular among expats living in Kuala Lumpur — is perfect for letting loose with friends, featuring a fantastic selection of drinks, great music, and a social vibe. Whether you’re here to dance or just soak in the atmosphere, it’s a classic spot to spend the night in Bukit Bintang. Relax at the main floor courtyard or head upstairs for DJs and dancing.

7. For Novelty: Helipad Lounge
To be real with you—you're not coming to Helipad Lounge for craft cocktails. But what it does offer is one of the most unique nightlife experiences in Kuala Lumpur: an open-air helipad-turned-lounge with unbeatable 360-degree skyline views. Watching the sunset from here, with the Petronas Towers glowing in the distance, is something special.
It’s a spot you’ll probably come to once for the epic view, but if it’s a jaw-dropping backdrop you’re seeking, Helipad delivers and makes the 100 MYR entry fee (including 2 drinks) worthwhile for the experience.

BEST KL BARS IN CHINATOWN
Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown is a treasure trove of hidden bars and unique spots to explore. From cozy speakeasies to vibrant artsy spaces, this area is home to some of the coolest bars and eateries in Kuala Lumpur. No wonder it’s my favorite neighborhood in the city! If you're looking for a mix of great vibes, locally inspired cocktails, and a little adventure, Chinatown's nightlife scene is the place to be.
The back alley of Concubine is full of murals commemorating old Malaysia, and lined with moody lanterns. This is also a great photo spot day or night in Chinatown!
8. 🎵 For Live Jazz & More: Jao Tim
For live music and a jazzy atmosphere, Jao Tim is the place to be. Situated on the 2nd floor of an old Chinatown building, this spot pairs an industrial art deco vibe with intimate performances that range from jazz and R&B to themed tribute shows (think Britney Spears or Disney!). The musicians they host here are incredibly talented and fun to watch.
One of my favorite events here is their weekend jam sessions. They offer discounted tickets since this one-of-a-kind show type accommodates amateurs who want to join the band and perform, making it a fun experience for both musicians and listeners. Watching the talented house band easily recall and learn any song requested is always a treat.
My go-to order here is a beer or latte with a slice of their carrot walnut cake or chocolate peanut butter cake. They also have comfort foods like a grilled cheese sandwich and soup. Be sure to check their schedule on Instagram for upcoming events, as tickets for shows often sell out in advance.
The high ceiling and industrial rawness of Jao Tim make it a very special venue to enjoy some of KL's best muscial talents - including jazz, pop and R&B shows.

9. 🎵 For the Hipsters: REXKL
REXKL is a cool repurposed cinema-turned-cultural hub in Chinatown. The ground level features Food Fiction, a vibrant area with eateries like Rajin Ramen, Phil’s Pizza, and KANTIN for Malaysian food. Upstairs, discover cozy spots like Fafaba Wine Bar and the hidden Shhhbuuuleee, a terrace offering views above Chinatown.
After grabbing a bite, don't miss the BookXcess store on the top floor. With its over-the-top design, it’s a must-see! There are also cute retail shops in REXKL to buy handmade souvenirs.
Check out their Instagram @hellorexkl for event updates — I’ve attended a brilliant immersive sound and light show here and they regularly host live bands and DJs. If no event is on, you’re nearby plenty of other great Chinatown hangouts to keep the night going.
While the food court is on the lower level, upstairs you'll find an immersive art space where they often have sound and light shows, or live concerts. Check their Instagram @hellorexkl to see what's on during your stay!

10. For Neon Vibes: GString
GString is one of those places that straddles the line between pub and club, but in the best way. It’s a great spot even if you’re not a party animal (I’m not one either!). The upstairs area has a lively social vibe, and the quirky neon decor gives it a playful feel, or outdoor seating on their small patio if you prefer something more intimate. If you're lucky, you might catch a DJ spinning early 2000s classics — my kind of music!
The ambiance here is buzzing, so if it’s slightly more of a party vibe you’re going for, this could be a good place for you. If you want more of a party vibe, you can also head to XO bar from here for dancing.
The terrace at GString offers a more intimate space than the inside, which is more of a social ambiance with DJ.

11. For Mystery: PS150 Speakeasy
I’ve never taken someone to PS150 who didn’t like it — it’s a special spot! It’s a hidden speakeasy with a mysterious vibe, tucked away near the Four Points by Sheraton. Locating the entrance is part of the fun — you’ll need to locate the discreet door near a stationary shop to begin the adventure. Once inside, the decor takes you back to a nostalgic Far East era, reminiscent of what used to be an opium den.
Some of the best drinks in KL are served in the speakeasy ambiance of PS150.

12. For a Speakeasy: Attic Bar
Another one of my favorite spots in Kuala Lumpur, Attic Bar is tucked away near Ali, Muthu & A Hock in Chinatown. It’s a bit of a secret, but the adventure is worth it and part of the fun. Head up to the rooftop for dim lighting, old China decor, and a stunning view of Merdeka 118, the second-tallest building in the world.
They offer some nice cocktails, like the Bunga Telang (gin, butterfly pea flower, lime & tonic) and Makers Plum Fizz (bourbon, asam plum, lime, ginger soda). If you’re feeling adventurous, try the Teh-Haram — it’s a mix of Earl Grey vodka, gin, rum, tequila, pandan, and coke. Strong but fun! I’m not a big fan of the tuak cocktails (local rice wine) here, so would pass on those and maybe stick to the classics.
The relaxed vibe and great view make it a perfect spot to unwind or catch up with friends.

13. For Exclusive Vibes: Penrose
Looking for something more exclusive and intimate? Penrose has you covered. This hidden spot only has a handful of seats, making it a perfect place for one-on-one conversations. The entrance is unassuming for a high-end establishment— an industrial-looking shiny steel wall and a tiny sign — but once you step inside, you’re in for a treat.
Beyond the minimalist, sleek design, the cocktails here are top-notch, using the best ingredients - so it's no wonder Penrose KL was named one of Asia's 50 Best Bars. For example, try the Makopa Martini (gin, June plum, vermouth, lava salt) or the Rossini (gin, strawberry, sparkling, kaffir). The bartenders are super knowledgeable, and they’ll craft a cocktail based on your personal preferences if you ask.
It’s a small but exclusive spot, perfect for when you’re in the mood for something different and a little more refined.

14. 🎵 For a Quirky Dive: Junk Cafe
If you’re after a spot bursting with personality, Junk Cafe is a gem. Originally from George Town, Penang, its new Chinatown KL location opened in 2024, bringing the same offbeat charm. As the name suggests, it’s packed with "junk"—but artfully arranged, turning the space into a whimsical, reggae-infused retreat. It’s the kind of place where you can kick back, relax, and just be yourself.
Live music takes over on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, while a funky reggae playlist keeps the good vibes flowing the rest of the time.

MORE KUALA LUMPUR BARS
Beyond Bukit Bintang and Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur has plenty of other great spots to spend an evening. Whether you’re after skyline views, a casual beer in a kopitiam, or an epic karaoke night with friends, these hangouts offer something for every vibe.
17. 🎵 For Live Cover Band: Tom, Dick & Harry’s in Bangsar South
My absolute favorite spot for a Friday night after work. If you love a live band that’ll belt out crowd-favorite covers with serious talent, Tom, Dick & Harry’s @ The Sphere in Bangsar South is a must on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night for live music from 9:30 PM until late.
We loved the band - The Amazing Lineup - at Tom, Dick & Harry's so much that we snapped a photo with them at the end of the show! The Backstreet Boys medley was absolutely perfect. Lead singer Shasha is missing from this photo but she has phenomenal pipes.
This open-air venue has a fun, rustic-modern style, and it’s fully covered—so no worries if it rains. The setup is simple and relaxed, but let’s be real: the magic is in the band. The Amazing Lineup is probably way too talented to be playing here, so take it in while you can! Their lead singer, Shasha Zainal, has powerhouse vocals, and the band effortlessly takes on audience requests. In fact, this is where I had my going-away party when I left Kuala Lumpur after 4.5 years, and they made it so special.
Bangsar South is a bit off the beaten path, but if it’s an awesome live cover band you’re after, you won’t regret an evening here.

For a classier and closer view of the Petronas Twin Towers, Wet Deck at W Kuala Lumpur is one of the best picks. Their spacious pool deck gives you a front-row seat to KL’s most famous towers, especially spectacular when they light up at night.
The ambiance here is chic and social, with seating in the open-air covered bar area or out by the pool deck. Just note that the pool itself is closed at night, so it’s all about the drinks and the view.

Dress Codes at KL Bars
While many of the bars listed here have no dress code, you should know that many rooftops and classier bars apply a smart casual dress code. In those cases, men cannot wear shorts, and men and women alike shouldn't wear flip-flops, sportswear, baseball caps, ripped jeans, or alcohol-branded clothing.
Limited On Time in Kuala Lumpur?
If you have a short stay in Kuala Lumpr, then the top bars I'd suggest checking out are Vertigo or Helipad for views, Attic Bar or PS150 for ambiance, and Suzie Wong for a memorable show (if you're there on a weekend).
You can also take a day tour before you go out, to make the most of your stay and see the most important sights in the city, like Batu Caves, the Petronas Towers, and more.
Enjoy Kuala Lumpur!
Whether you're looking for a buzzy rooftop bar, a no-frills live music joint, a dance floor, or just a laid-back beer under Chinese lanterns, Kuala Lumpur has it all—you just need to know where to look. Even after years of living here, I was still finding new favorites, and I hope this guide helps you discover a few of your own.
